Chapter Twenty-Three
Fairchild
Fairchild sat there utterly stunned. Gobsmacked, to quote her brother Rudy, himself something of an expert on the topic.
No more adulting? Of course that was a load of horse shit, but not flying the every three or four day loops, to pick up data because the boffins were too cheap, would be awesome. On the flipside, sheâd be off base a lot more, and not around to seduce anyone. Or be seduced.
Fairchild suspected that lots more people would want to be her friend now, but only for ulterior motives having nothing to do with good sexytimes.
She automatically sliced another chunk of apple and thirded it for the gang. They seemed to like apples, but were in for a rude surprise if they tried to cultivate them.
Even Fairchild knew that you couldnât grow apples. Well, you could, but they were so chimerical that youâd get an entirely different breed if you did. Every Granny Smith apple in the galaxy was taken from a child graft of a tree originally discovered on Anne Smithâs farm, centuries ago. Same with the Galaxy Three she was enjoying. Cut and graft.
Of course, alien apples raised by dragons would probably be worth their weight in platinum, if only for the story behind them.
âYou got the tablet?â she asked Ann-Marta.
Rather than chuck it, the woman rose on graceful legs and walked over, handing it to her, like Fairchild could be counted on to drop it. Of course, she was really only dexterous when flying, so maybe the woman had a point.
Fairchild powered it up and put it down on the dirt in front of her, screen up. Like every bit of electronics kit, it flashed the Spartan logo before moving on to a standard touch screen.
All three of the dragons were mesmerized, like she was a snake charmer playing a mesmerical horn at them. Quickly, she navigated through screens to find the one she wanted, dropping a launch shortcut back on the main screen.
Fairchild touched that to open a painting program. The ancient one that only displayed in two dimensions, and with only a few hundred thousand color options. Black was good enough for now, but eventually sheâd have to walk them through everything.
With a fingertip, she wrote her name in block capital letters across the top. Then she switched brushes, wiped everything clean, and then switched back and wrote her name again.
That started one hell of a polite argument within her petite dragon horde. Jade and maroon seemed to be ganging up on Periwinkle, possibly along the lines of âYou got us into this messâ from the tone.
Periwinkle chirped at them, then up at her, and waddled over. He seemed to grasp that this was a touchscreen, because he leaned way out, rear legs braced and tail straight backwards as he hovered over the tablet and touched it once, dragging a clawed finger across the surface.
Thankfully, his skin composition was close enough to hers that the machine read his touch. It matched the line, and sheâd set the width pretty high so that it was visible, in spite of how tiny his hands were.
